I spent some time on our private lease this weekend hunting but didn’t get anything. I found my stand blown over by the wind. The hogs had been around rooting up the dirt and the deer wasn’t stirring. But on a happy note, I did get to wear my new super warm Treezyn Gear!!! Love this stuff.
On Sunday evening as the sun went down, the weekend came to a close and we had school and work tomorrow. I picked up Aves and we headed home.
By the time we drove the seemingly gazillion miles (really only about 40 miles), the sun was down and it’s really dark outside in the country at night. As we pulled into our driveway, my headlights caught what I thought was a black cat heading across my yard to the right of our driveway.
“Hmmm… a black cat? That’s odd,” I thought. With two dogs and us living way out in the country, I was surprised to see it. No one around us had cats that I knew of.
As I rolled to a stop several things ran through my mind – Black cat, small panther, black bob-cat, the list goes on. But none of those prepared me for the truth.
I swung the truck to the right to catch another glimpse of it in the headlights. It took a minute or two but I finally found it and to my surprise, it was none other than a SKUNK!!! A solid black skunk scurrying through my yard. It had come from the direction of my house and was heading for the tall weeds at the edge of the yard.
“Oh! Brother!” I said out loud, “just what we need Aves. I guess it sprayed the dogs.”
It hurried on into the tall weeds and disappeared. I backed up my trunk and pulled into the garage’s open door. Expecting the dogs to be there smelling ripe. But no, the dogs apparently had run for the hills. They were nowhere to be found.
What I did find or rather “smelled” was that maybe the skunk had sprayed them before they got away. And while they were still in the garage!!! Because the entire garage now smelled RIPE!!! The skunk smell was overpowering. And I had somehow either gotten the smell on my trunk or the skunk had sprayed the floor where my truck was sitting. Uggh! “Hurry, “I yelled to Averi, “get your stuff and make a run for the door!”
We jumped out, grabbed our hunting gear, and ran for the back door. But there was no getting away from the wretched smell. It had seeped into the house and the entire place reeked of SKUNK! We were gagging and spitting and trying to get away from the smell.
I didn’t know how to get the smell out so I Googled it. Apparently boiling vinegar will do the trick. Of course, I didn’t have plain vinegar so I got out the apple cider vinegar and boiled some. Thankfully it worked enough we could get cleaned up and get to sleep but let me tell you it wasn’t a great smell.
If you ever get a skunk smell in your house (and hopefully for your sake you never do) then I suggest boiling the vinegar. It helps. Not sure if the smell was gone this morning or we just got used to it. I’m hoping it was gone. I haven’t seen anyone looking at us strange yet. So I’m guessing that maybe we don’t smell like a skunk.
Just another adventure. It wasn’t one I wouldn’t have planned but we survived it. I think?
Of course, I didn’t get a picture of it so I’ll just leave you with this picture of me smiling as I headed out to hunt this weekend. Blissfully unaware of the fate that awaited me on my return home.
